The invention relates to a novel process for the encapsulation of emulsifiable contaminants such as hydrocarbons encountered within systems of soils or residues of industrial process. The method uses a new surfactant agent for the disabsorbtion and emulsification of the contaminant followed by the addition of a silicate solution. The alkali-earth portion of the surfactant agent causes the catalytic reaction or precipitation of the silicate into silica and forms immediately an encapsulating cover around the disabsorbed and emulsified material. Said encapsulation process reacts only with the contaminant into a contaminated soil matrix and not with the soil host or matrix of the residue. The encapsulating cover will have a diameter or size which is directly related to the efficiency of the emulsification process and to the size of the mycelium resulting from the emulsifier and the contaminating agent. In general, the diameter of the encapsulating cover will be approximately of 200 microns; this microencapsulation, only of the contaminating agent, produces a treated soil with essentially the same physical characteristics as those of the non-treated soil.
|
