The security element comprises a transparent or translucent substrate (4) that is provided with front and rear surfaces. An optically variable surface layer (5) is formed at the front surface, and an optically variable back layer (6) is formed at the rear surface. The front and back layers are overlapped at an overlapping region of the substrate. Recess structures are formed in the overlap region of optically variable front layer and/or optically variable back layer.
