Oxidation of an aldehyde to the corresponding acid by molcular O2 , effected at ambient temperature giving high yield and selectivity. The process is applicable to the preparation of 2 - 22C carboxylic acids, preferably 3 - 13C acids, and particularly alpha-branched acids. The reaction is effected at 10 - 20 deg C. under a partial pressure of O2 of 2 - 7 bar : the total pressure is 2 - 25 bar.A diluent gas, such as N2, may be mixed with the O2 and the total pressure may be greater or less than 10 bar.
