A hand-held electrode wetted with liquid electrolyte inhibits corrosion at welds and marks stainless steel with gold. The process concerns electroplating a restricted area of an electroconductive material, especially metal, especially for applying an anticorrosion coating to welded seams or other damage to the zinc layer of galvanized steel components. Connections are made between (i) a first, negative pole of a direct current voltage source and the surface of the material and (ii) a second, positive pole and an electrode that is or can be wetted by a liquid electrolyte containing the metal to be applied. The area is electroplated by applying a deposition voltage to the poles and bringing the electrode into contact with the surface of the material. Independent claims are also included for (a) the apparatus used; (b) the electrode; (c) an electrolytic cleaning agent; and (d) the use of alkylsulfonic acid and/or butyndiol in a liquid for electrolytic cleaning and/or surface polishing of stainless steel, especially near welds.
