The apparatus comprises source terminal with processor and memory accessible by the processor and designed to store a source terminal program which, after execution by the processor, forms an ISDN set-up message containing a data rate extension message. The source memory stores a data rate extension indicator for including into the data rate extension message. S source terminal interface is connectable to an ISDN exchange which contains a channel coordinator comprising a composite B-channel with two partial B-channels for transmission of the data rate extension message to the exchange. The message supplies the extension indicator to the exchange for its information that the source terminal requests a composite B-channel for communication with a destination terminal. An Independent claim is included for a method for expanding data rate in an ISDN system.
