The present invention discloses a light emitting element control unit including a data detecting section (5) to detect a data signal for a predetermined time for a burst transmission period, a reference signal generating section (6) to generate a reference signal, an optical power control section (7) to compare a monitor signal detected from optical output from a light emitting element (3) with the reference signal so as to output a light emitting element driving and controlling signal for a control of a light emitting element driving section (2) depending upon the result of comparison and output from the data detecting section (5), a holding section (8) to hold output from the optical power control section (7), and a switching section (9) switched depending upon a data signal, thereby feeding any one of output from the optical power control section (7) and output from the holding section (8) to the light emitting element driving section (2). It is an object to enable a rapid rise of optical output in a first burst head section, and stably feed second or later burst optical output irrespective of a holding time.
