Conditions of restraint between a machine shaft bearing (3) and a rotary section (2) held by it, are varied under control. This alters the vibration transfer function between rotary section and bearing, or a component (7) contacting the bearing. Vibrations concerned, are especially those producing sound waves. By controlled variation of the vibration transfer coefficient, noise is reduced or eliminated. An electrical potential applied, varies the resonant frequency of the rotating section. An Independent claim is included for the corresponding shaft bearing. |
