A method for removing environmentally persistent contaminants from a fluid comprises contacting the fluid with an expanded material, i.e. popped corn, puffed wheat or puffed rice. Preferably the expanded material is either immersed in the fluid or the fluid is passed through a bed of the expanded material, for a sufficient time to remove a for a sufficient time to remove a substantial portion of the contaminants. The method is applicable to a wide range of contaminants, e.g. pesticides, organohalides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo furans (PCDFs), polychlorinated dibenzo dioxins (PCDDs) dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and benzenoid solvents. Other examples include inorganic compounds or organo-metallic compounds, e.g. those containing aluminum, antimony, barium, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper, iron, lead, mercury, molybdenum, nickel, silver, tin, titanium, vanadium and zinc.
