摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase a visual angle and reaction rate or to eliminate the need for rubbing by projecting a direction of liquid crystal molecules at an angle larger or smaller than a specific angle to the front surface of each one area. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal molecules 206 are liquid crystal molecules of a chiral homeotropic array and have the one overlapping area 41 between two domains. The included angle formed between the inclination direction of the liquid crystal molecules of the area 41 and the inclination direction of the areas 40, 42 is larger or smaller than 90 deg.. The included angleϕformed when the vector of the liquid crystal molecules of two areas 40, 42 of these areas is projected on the substrate is smaller of larger then 180 deg.. The direction of the liquid crystal molecules in each one area at the time of an off state is nearly perpendicular to the substrate surface and forms a slight pretilt angle with the normal direction of a substrate. The liquid crystal molecules of the area 40, 42 is larger or smaller in the included angleϕformed between their inclination directions than 180 deg.. The pretilt angle tremendously affects the reaction time of the liquid crystal molecules.
