A biodegradable mineral wool contains fluorine plus lithium oxide and sodium oxide plus potassium oxide in a specified ratio. A mineral wool, which is soluble in physiological media, has the composition (by wt.) 54-70 (preferably 62-68) % SiO2, 0-5 (preferably 1.5-4) % Al2O3, 4-15 (preferably 8-12) % CaO and/or MgO, 12-22 (preferably 14-18) % Na2O and/or K2O, 1-10 (preferably 2.5 - 7) % B2O3, 0.1-3 (preferably 0.3-2) % F, 0.05-2 (preferably 0.1-1.5) % Li2O, 0-2 (preferably 0-1) % Fe2O3 (total Fe), 0-3% P2O5 and 0-2% each (preferably /}3% total) MnO, TiO2 and other impurities, the ratio (F + Li2O)/(Na2O + K2O) being 0.015-0.12, preferably 0.02-0.08. An Independent claim is also included for a thermal and/or acoustic insulation product or a soil-less culture substrate comprising the above mineral wool.
