PURPOSE: A method is provided for temporally protecting a glass sheet from scratch, abrasion and impurities during the manufacturing process such as cutting and edge grinding. CONSTITUTION: A glass sheet is temporally protected from scratch, abrasion and impurities during the manufacturing process by depositing it into a solution of water and polymer at a temperature between 200 and 450°C immediately after the formation of the glass sheet to form a protective coating. Preferably the polymer is poly(vinyl alcohol), the solution is sprayed onto the surface of the glass sheet. The coating is soluble in water at a temperature more than 60°C, preferably more than 80°C, however insoluble in water at a temperature less than 20°C. The coating is easily removed by washing it with water more than 80°C.
