FLUORINE-CONTAINING SECONDARY ALCOHOL, LUBRICANT AND MAGNETIC RECORDING MEDIUM, AND PRODUCTION OF THE SAME MEDIUM

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound having excellent lubricating property and useful as a lubricant. SOLUTION: This compound is expressed by formula I R1 is an alkyl or alkenyl; R2 is a fluoroalkyl, fluoroether or fluoropolyether; (a)>=0}, e.g. a compound of formula II. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting, e.g. an alkylglycidyl ether or an alkenylglycidyl ether with a fluorine-containing primary alcohol, preferably in a molar ratio of 1/1, after mixing while stirring together with a catalyst in a solvent (e.g. heptane) at preferably 80-150 deg.C. The compound of formula I is useful as a material constituting a lubricant and especially suitable for constituting a lubricant layer in a magnetic recording medium. A composition having excellent lubricating property is obtained by including 40 wt.% of the compound.
