PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a large area polarizing plate that is used for the light orientation process of a large area liquid crystal display device and that secures uniformity in illuminance distribution, by structuring it with a quartz substrate part, which is formed by laminating one or more square, triangular or parallelogramatical quartz substrates that polarizes incident light, and with a polarizer holder which holds the quartz substrate part. SOLUTION: A large area polarizing plate 10 is constituted of a quartz substrate part 15 and a polarizer holder 13 formed in a grid structure for holding the quartz substrate part 15. The quartz substrate part 15 is formed between polarizer holders 13 so as to have an angle of polarization (angle θB formed by the normal of the quartz substrate and incident light) against incident non- polarizing parallel light beams. Among the incident non-polarizing parallel light beams, those reflected by the quartz substrate part 15 are absorbed by the polarizer holder 13, while those penetrated the quartz substrate part 15 are emitted onto an orientation film. In this case, the polarizer holder 13 is desirably formed with a material whose light absorptivity is nearly 100%. |
