<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a composition with improved characteristics, a reduced decay time in particular, by employing europium as a main activator at a high level and incorporating at least one of a specific class of other rare earth metals as an acceptor. SOLUTION: This scintillator composition comprises a major portion of yttrium oxide or lutertium oxide and a minor portion of gadolinium oxide as matrix substances, europium oxide in an amount of about 3.1-30 mol% based on the whole scintillator composition as an activator producing least 99% of the whole light emission, a minor portion of an acceptor to reduce a decay time, and calcium in an amount of about 2-500 mol ppm and cerium in an amount of about 3-500 mol ppm to reduce damages by radioactive rays, and reaction products thereof. As the acceptor, oxides of ytterbium, terbium, praseodymium, holmium, erbium, thulium, samarium, neodymium or the like can be used.</p> |
