<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pigment dispersant which gives a pigment composition having good rheological properties and to provide a coating or ink composition which, when applied and cured, forms a film with a satisfactory gloss by using an amino acid derivative as an effective component of the pigment dispersant. SOLUTION: A glycidyl ether of formula I or II, a glycidyl ester of formula III, or an epoxyalkane of formula IV is reacted with a neutral or acidic amino acid in an alcohol-water mixture under neutral to basic conditions at temperatures of 0-200 deg.C to give a pigment dispersant comprising an amino acid derivative of formula V. A pigment is compounded with the dispersant in an amount of 1-20 wt.% of the pigment, 1-10 pts.wt. per total weight, of a thickener, and a solvent to give a coating or ink composition. In the formulas, R1 and R2 are each a 8-22C linear or branched alkyl or alkenyl; m is 0-20; Y is O or COO; j is 0 or 1; X is H, a 1-5C alkyl, or a group of formula VI; A is a residue of a neutral or acidic amino acid formed by removing an amino group section; (n) is 0-20; (k) is 0 or 1; and (q) is 1-20.</p> |
