PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display device capable of enhancing the light utilization efficiency. SOLUTION: This image display device has a first optical block 1 which includes a first lens array 21 for converging the luminous flux from a light source 3 and making the distribution of luminance uniform, a polarized light conversion element 131 which has a beam splitter 131a transmitting a first polarization component and reflecting a second polarization component, a mirror 131b for making the second polarization component reflected by the beam splitter 131a nearly the same direction as the progression direction of the first polarization component and a half-wave plate 131c arranged in a section to emit the second polarization component in the mirror 131b in order to polarize the second polarization component from the mirror 131b and a second optical block 2 in which the incident surface for making the first polarization component incident at second lens cells 23a, 23b and an incident surface for making the second polarization component incident are formed on different planes and includes the second lens array 23 for converging the luminous flux emitted from the first optical block 1 and making the distribution of the luminance uniform.
