METHOD FOR CUTTING A LEADER AND A TAIL IN A WEB IN A PAPERMAKING MACHINE

There is disclosed a method for forming a leader and a tail in a web of a papermaking machine that utilizes a water jet cutting apparatus having a nozzle.mounted for movement along a beam that extends transversally across the width of the web. The method includes the step of initially positioning the water jet nozzle at one end of the beam outside of the first edge and activating the nozzle to spray a liquid jet from the nozzle. Thereafter, a leader is formed in the web by moving the nozzle from the initial position to a predetermined position within the outside edge of the web at a chosen speed relative to the web travel speed. At this second predetermined position a slit is formed to form a tail. By choosing the relative speed a flatter edge or leader is formed to facilitate turn-up. The web is supported at the location of the cut into the edge of the web to reduce the risk of the web tearing. Also, the forming of this leader and tail in one operation reduces the apparatus hardware required to accomplish the formation of a tail and the cutting of a leader in two separate stations.
