摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain excellent viewing angle characteristics of a transmission/reflection dual purpose liquid crystal display device. SOLUTION: A transmission/reflection dual purpose liquid crystal element 4 is held between first and second polarizing plates 2, 3, and a phase difference plate 5 for compensation of the viewing angle is held between the polarizing plate 3 and the element 4. A light source 6 is disposed in the opposite side to the phase difference plate 5 of the polarizing plate 3. The element 4 includes a light-transmitting first substrate 7 in the polarizing plate 2 side, a second substrate 8 having a light-transmitting region and reflecting region in the phase difference plate 5 side, and a liquid crystal layer 9 having positive dielectric anisotropy aligned in the horizontal direction between the substrates 7, 8. In the phase difference plate 5, the direction (nb) of the principal diffraction index of the refractive index ellipsoid is tilted from the Z axis as the normal direction of the substrate 8. In the transmission mode, when the viewing angle is inclined along the direction of the optical axis of the liquid crystal molecules to decrease the effective double refraction of the liquid crystal layer 9, the effective double refraction of the phase difference plate 5 increases. When the viewing angle is inclined in the opposite direction to increase the effective double refraction of the liquid crystal layer 9, the effective double refraction of the plate 5 decreases. Therefore, the decrease in the viewing angle characteristics for transmission can be compensated while the viewing angle characteristics for reflection is maintained high, and the obtained display has excellent display quality with a wide viewing angle.
