PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound of a penem compound having carboxyl group protected with a specific ester-forming group, having high bioavailability at the time of oral administration, and useful as an antimicrobial material. SOLUTION: This new compound is a penem compound of formula I R is formula II [R1 is H, a 1-6C alkyl or the like; R2 is a 1-6C (substituted)alkyl or the like; and (n) is 1-6], formula III (Y is a 5- or 6-membered heteroalicyclic having O in the ring) or the formula CH2-Z [Z is a 5-substituted-2-oxo-1,3- dioxolen-4-yl, and the 5-position substituent is a 1-6C (substituted)alkyl or the like]}, e.g. chloromethyl (5R,6S)-6-[(R)-1-hydroxyethyl]-2-[(R)-2- tetrahydrofuryl]penem-3-carboxylate. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a penem compound of formula IV (R4 is H, an alkali metal or the like) with a compound of the formula RX (X is a halogen) in an organic solvent (e.g. toluene). |
