<p>The invention provides a bleaching composition comprising: (i) a bleaching agent, and (ii) as bleaching activator, one or more compounds of general formulae (1), (2) or (3), wherein the ring A represents a fused benzene ring or a fused aromatic heterocyclic ring which is unsubstituted or substituted by one or more groups chosen from hydroxy, alkoxy, alkyl, alkaryl, aryl, aralkyl, amino, alkylamino, a -N+R3 OR -(CH2)n-N+R3 (wherein each R represents alkyl or aryl and n is an integer from 1 to 6) salt, -SO3H or a salt thereof, or a carbonyl-containing group; and each of R?5 to R10¿, which may be the same or different, represents H, hydroxy, alkoxy, alkyl, alkaryl, aryl, aralkyl, amino, alkylamino, a -N+R3 (wherein R is as defined above) salt, -SO3H or a salt thereof, or a carbonyl-containing group, or R?5 and R6, R7 and R8¿ and/or R?9 and R10¿, together with the carbon atom to which they are attached, form a carbonyl group or a cycloalkyl group. The bleaching compositions according to the present invention may be contained within detergent or cleaning compositions in use for example in the laundering of fabric. The lactones of formulae (1), (2) and (3) are particularly active as bleach actovators in laundry detergent and cleaning applications, especially those that need to operate at low temperatures.</p> |
