PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarizing plate from which linearly polarized light with an excellent polarization degree can be obtained, leaking of light in a cross-Nicol arrangement hardly caused, and a liquid crystal display device or the like having good visibility with excellent contrast in a black display or brightness in a white display can be produced. SOLUTION: The laminated polarizing plate consists of dichroic polarizing plate 1 and a polarizing scattering plate 3 which shows scattering anisotropy depending on the polarization direction, laminated with the absorption axis of the dichroic polarizing plate parallel to the optical axis showing strong scattering property of the polarizing scattering plate. The liquid crystal display device has the laminated polarizing plate on the light source side of a liquid crystal display panel. Thereby, the optical axis of the polarizing scattering plate which efficiently transmits linearly polarized light (in the direction where the light is hardly scattered) is matched with the transmission axis of the dichroic polarizing plate, which results in excellent transmittance in that axial direction. On the other hand, in the optical axial direction with strong scattering property of the polarizing scattering plate 3 matching with the absorption axis of the dichroic polarizing plate 1, linearly polarized light is intensely scattered to decrease the transmittance for light. As a whole, polarized light with a high polarization degree can be obtained without decreasing the transmittance for light so much. |
