PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a sulfonaldehyde derivative useful as an intermediate for lycopene which is a carotenoid important in the fields of pharmaceuticals, feed additives and food additives by oxidizing a specific sulfone alcohol derivative. SOLUTION: The objective compound of formula II is produced by oxidizing a sulfone alcohol derivative of formula I [Ar is a (substituted)aryl; and R1 is a lower alkyl or a protecting group of hydroxyl group]. The oxidation reaction is carried out e.g. by using a salt or oxide of a metal such as chromium and manganese, oxide of a metal such as nickel and selenium or a metal oxidizing agent such as silver carbonate. Other examples of the metal oxidizing agent are pyridinium chlorochromate and pyridinium dichromate and its amount is preferably 1-10 mol based on 1 mol of the compound of formula I. The reaction solvent is e.g. n-hexane and chloroform. The reaction is carried out at 0-50 deg.C for 1-36 hr.
|
