PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an activated carbon capable of giving an electric double layer capacitor having high electric capacity and small internal resistance when used as a material for a polarizing electrode of the capacitor, provide its production process, provide an activated carbon electrode produced by using the activated carbon and provide an electric double layer capacitor provided with the activated carbon electrode as a polarizing electrode and having high electric capacity and short time constant. SOLUTION: The process for the production of activated carbon comprises the heat-treatment of a resin containing chlorine atom in the molecule in the presence of a zinc compound containing zinc atom, carbon atom and oxygen atom in the molecule. The present invention further provides an activated carbon electrode formed by using the activated carbon and an electric double layer capacitor containing the activated carbon electrode as a polarizing electrode.
