The object of the invention is a method of cutting wood, in which, at least with the aid of a breaking blade device 4, pieces 9 are broken off from a piece of timber, such as a log 6 or the like, which is situated in a splitting device. In a first stage I, a piece 9' is broken off from the timber, such as the log 6 or the like, by means of a breaking blade device 4, which moves in a first direction sI, the piece 9' being further split into two or more pieces 9'' in a further stage II by pushing the piece 9' against a fixed splitter blade device 2 with the aid of a piston arrangement 5, which moves in a direction S2, which is preferably opposed to the first direction.
