SOLUTION: The device and method capable of automatically starting a receiving mode at the time of turning on a power supply in battery-driven electronic equipment mounting a communication interface including a receiving mode circuit, a battery for supplying power to the receiving mode circuit when the circuit is driven and a communication port such as an infrared port are provided. When the power supply is turned on, the communication interface is initialized and the receiving mode circuit can be driven in the receiving mode for a prescribed period. A timer counts up the prescribed period. When the counting of the timer runs out, the operation of the receiving mode circuit is stopped and the power supply is disconnected from the receiving mode circuit, so that battery power for the device can be saved. When a prescribed operation time runs out during the reception of input data by the receiving mode circuit, the prescribed operation time is extended by an extension timer.</p>
