PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and method for information retrieval by which the communication load in the device can be suppressed and information can be retrieved from an information storing device. SOLUTION: A medical treatment information management device 1 constituting an information retrieval device stores such positional information that indicates the medical treatment information storing device storing the medical treatment information specified by an item inputted from an operator. A medical treatment information outputting device 2 also stores whole or part of the positional information stored in the management device 1. The outputting device 2 acquires the positional information from the storage device 9 of the management device 1 only when the positional information corresponding to the item specifying medical treatment information is not stored in a storage device 10. When the positional information is stored in the storage device 10, the output device 2 acquires the positional information from the device 10. By constituting the information retrieval device in the above-mentioned way, the communication load in the device can be suppressed.
