PURPOSE: Provided is a method for mass producing high purity 7-amino-3-methoxymethyl- 3-cephem-4-carboxylic acid. CONSTITUTION: The 7-amino-3-methoxymethyl- 3-cephem-4-carboxylic acid represented by the formula (1) is produced by reacting 7-aminocephalosporanic acid represented by formula (2) with 70% trimethylborate-methanol azeotropic mixture in the presence of methane sulfonic acid, in which 3.0 to 7.5 equivalent of 70% trimethylborate-methanol azeotropic mixture, 5 to 20 equivalent of methane sulfonic acid, and 2.0 to 5.5 equivalent of trimethylborate per 1 equivalent of 7-aminocephalosporanic acid are used.
