PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a forming method for a laminated coating film having excellent appearance by controlling concordance or inversion in the boundary between each coating film layer in the case of applying successively a water based intermediate coating film and a top coating film on an under coating film. SOLUTION: In the coating film forming method for successively forming the intermediate coating film with a water based intermediate coating material, a metallic base coating film with a water based metallic base coating material and a clear coating film with a clear coating material on a base material, on which an electrodeposition coating film is formed, the water based intermediate coating material contains a water dispersion of an amide group-containing arylic resin particle having 0.01-1.0μm particle diameter, which is obtained by emulsion-polymerizing an amide group-containing ethylenic unsaturated monomer and the other ethylenic unsaturated monomer.
