PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a biaxially oriented polyester film simultaneously satisfying improved scratch resistance and improved electromagnetic conversion characteristics as a magnetic tape and particularly suitable as a base film for a high-density magnetic recording tape. SOLUTION: The biaxially oriented polyester film comprises as a resin component a polyester and at least one thermoplastic resin selected among polyimide resins, polysulfones, polyethersulfones, 0.01-2.0 wt.% of inert particles A having an average particle size of 0.001-0.8μm and a Mohs hardness of at least 6 and 0.001-0.03 wt.% of inert particles B having an average particle size of 0.3-1.6μm and a Mohs hardness of less than 3, and has an extrapolated glass transition temperature (Tg-onset) of 90-150 deg.C.
