PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an optical film exhibiting uniform scattering characteristics and easily controlling the scattering characteristics. SOLUTION: In the optical film comprising a polarized light selection layer which selectively transmits a kind of polarized light and selectively reflects or scatters another kind of polarized light formed on a transparent substrate, the polarized light selection layer is formed with an optically isotropic phase and an optically anisotropic phase. A photo aligning compound and a compound exhibiting optical anisotropy on aligning are added to the optically anisotropic phase and the optical anisotropy of the optically anisotropic phase is exhibited by light irradiation. Subsequently adjustment is carried out to make the refractive indexes of the optically anisotropic and isotropic phases on one axis out of the logging and advancing axes essentially equal.
