In the present invention, there is no usual line-up at the checkout counter with customers waiting to pay for the merchandise in their hands or basket or cart; instead, a customer continually sends (on a conveyor belt, for example) the merchandise, at the time of, or soon after, selecting it an d after labeling it (electronically and/or manually, e.g., by scanning a number such as with a magnetic plastic card, for example) as his or her selected item, to a central checkout counter to be put together with all oth er such selections of his with an on-going tallying up of the current total price - all ready for the customer to pay for and pick-up at any time. For small and quick purchases of a couple of items, for example, some ordina ry checkout counters may be maintained at the store in addition.
