A head carriage assembly and method for reading data from and/or writing dat a to a data medium, usually one or more rotating disks. The head carriage assembly comprises one or more head carriers, and may include a means for moving the head carriage assembly relative to th e disks. Head carriers have a means for support relative to the head carriage assembly at two or mo re points, and may provide a means for moving the head carrier relative to the head carriage assembly. Individual head carriers comprise one or more heads, and may provide a means for moving the head relative to the head carrier. The entire head carriage assembly is mounted in relation to th e data medium in such a fashion that rotation of the data medium, of the head carriage assembly, or both, causes individual heads to trace a path along the surface of the data medium.
