PURPOSE: A manufacturing method of multiwall carbon nanotubes with an increased surface area is provided, which enables to adsorb nano-sized harmful materials and bacteria selectively by surface-treating carbon tubes with alkali compounds in Ar or N2 atmosphere. CONSTITUTION: The multiwall carbon nanotubes are manufactured by the following steps of: treating nanotubes prepared by arc-discharge, being 150m¬2/g in surface area, with alkali compounds such as KOH and NaOH; primary thermal-treating at 400deg.C for 30min. in Ar or N2 gas atmosphere(10cc/min.) to eliminate organic materials in the carbon nanotubes; secondary thermal-treating at 600-900deg.C for 20-60min. in Ar or N2 gas atmosphere(10cc/min.); washing to remove remaining KOH and NaOH; drying at 70deg.C. The resultant nanotubes, being 1850m¬2/g in surface area, are applied to H2 storage, secondary battery, field emission display(FED) and semiconductors.
