PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and method of calculating a fin interval which allows a relatively easy calculation of a fin interval with which a heat sink can have a satisfactory heat radiation efficiency. SOLUTION: Fins of the heat sink are installed directed vertically at prescribed intervals for natural air cooling. Fin temperature Tw at a certain fin interval is obtained from an experiment or simulation result (step S61) conducted once, and then a Grashof number Gr is found (step S62). A thicknessδof a boundary layer is found (step S63). Next, a maximum flow rate generated positionδUmax is calculated as one third of the thicknessδof the boundary layer from the wall of the fin (step S64). Finally, an optimal fin interval (y) is calculated (step S65). The heat sink is designed with the thus obtained fin interval. By assuming that there is only one fine, calculation can be made relatively simple.
