PURPOSE: A liquid crystal display is provided to eliminate a need to use a transparent electrode, thereby enabling massive production at a low cost and allowing the liquid crystal display to have high contrast, and to facilitate the display of a multi-gray scale image. CONSTITUTION: A pair of substrates of which at least one substrate is transparent are provided. A liquid crystal layer is held between the pair of substrates. One of the substrates is provided with plural signal electrodes(12) and plural scanning electrodes(10) arranged to cross the plural signal electrodes. Pixels are formed corresponding to the regions surrounded by the plural signal electrodes(12) and the plural scanning electrodes(10). Each pixel is provided with a thin-film transistor, arranged near the intersection of a signal electrode(12) and a scanning electrode(10) and a pixel electrode(1) connected with this-thin film transistor. A common electrode(2) is arranged in the same direction as the signal electrode(12) corresponding to each pixel. At least one common electrode(2) and at least one pixel electrode(1) are formed on the same layer by interposing an insulating layer formed over the plural scanning electrodes(10).
