PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for safely, surely and economically carrying out the long-term continuous operation of an ethylene production apparatus by controlling properly an amount of a stable free radical compound for the prevention of staining in the separation and purification steps of the ethylene producing process. SOLUTION: A stable free radical compound is added to the bottom liquid of a distillation column in a manner to keep the value of [stable free radical compound×the number of free radicals in the molecule of the compound] to 3-12μmol/kg (bottom liquid).
