PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for processing waste plastics that can subject waste plastics to the thermal cracking whereby the cracked distillate is formed and the pH of the distillate can be neutralized simultaneously. SOLUTION: Alkaline substance is added from the alkaline additive feeder 20 to waste plastics including PET. The waste plastics 1 is subjected to pyrolytic dechlorination in the pyrolytic dechlorinator 3, then to thermal cracking in the thermal cracker 4 to form the cracked gas. The acidic gas occurring in the thermal cracker 4 is neutralized with an alkaline substance. The cracked gas from the thermal cracker 4 is recovered in the cracked oil recovery equipment 6.
