PURPOSE:To obtain a 6-hydroxy-N-containing 6-membered ring compound useful as an intermediate for pharmaceuticals, agrichemicals, dyes, etc., in high efficiency by treating a specific nitrogen-containing 6-membered ring compound with a microbial cell capable of introducing OH group to the 6-site of the compound in the presence of nicotinic acid in an aqueous medium. CONSTITUTION:The 6-hydroxy-N-containing 6-membered ring compound of formula II (e.g. 6-hydroxy-3-cyanopyridine) useful as a synthetic intermediate for pharmaceuticals, agrichemicals, dyes, etc., can be produced by treating a nitrogen-containing 6-membered ring compound of formula I (R<1> is carboxyl, carbamoyl, cyano, formyl, 1-5C hydroxyalkyl, 2-6C alkoxycarbonyl, carboxymethyl, etc.; R<2> is H or carboxyl; A is C or N) (e.g. 3-cyanopyridine) with cells or treated cells of a microorganism capable of introducing hydroxyl group to the 6-site of the compound [e.g. Comamonas acidovorans (NCIMB 9289)] in the presence of nicotinic acid and/or 6-hydroxynicotinic acid in an aqueous medium at 30 deg.C for 24hr. |
