PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image recognizing method and its device by which positional detection is exactly performed even when a pattern to be detected and a similar pattern coexist in image data. SOLUTION: The image recognizing method includes a step to input the image data 5 of the pattern to be detected the image of which is picked up, a step to create a rough recognition evaluation value table 11 by calculating correlation coefficients between a preliminarily registered reference pattern 7 and the image data 5 the image of which is picked up by every prescribed thinning interval, a step to select a accurate recognition detecting position 13 from the rough recognition evaluation value table 11 and a center position detection step to detect coordinates where the correlation coefficient between the reference pattern 7 and the pattern 1 to be detected becomes maximum in an accurate recognition area 14 set by using the accurate recognition detecting position 13 and the thinning interval and all the positions to indicate rough recognition evaluation values to exceed a preset threshold 12 are selected as the accurate recognition detecting positions 13 in the step to decide the accurate recognition detecting position.
