PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To speed up conveying process of a mail sorter as well as enhance the variety of papers handled by the mail sorter. SOLUTION: Undersurface belts 20, 22, 24, 26 provided for a conveying portion 6, a rejection portion 7, a compensating portion 8 and a transferring portion 9 divided in blocks, are placed at a predetermined angle to the horizontal plane; whereas side face belts 21, 23, 25, 27 are positioned perpendicular to each undersurface belt. A paper 4 is carried with its one side in contact with the undersurface belts and its one face supported by the side face belts. With this, many kinds of papers 4 (having different thickness, firmness, shapes) or papers 4 with different sizes (height, width) can be handled. All undersurface belts and the side face belts 21, 23 rotate continuously at a constant speed, on the other hand, the side face belts 25, 27 rotate at a speed corresponding to the difference between the actual conveying time of papers and its logical conveying time. Thus, the conveying time is adjusted.
