PURPOSE: Provided is a controlling agent which contains as active ingredient, 4-hydroxy-6-methyl-3-(3-methylbutanoyl)-2-pyrone and has excellent controlling effects on noxious arthropods and excellent practicality and safety. CONSTITUTION: A controlling agent for the arthropods comprises a certain kind of alpha -pyrone compound of the formula(1) having immediately effective controlling effects on the noxious arthropods, for instance, insect pests of the order Blattaria such as Blattella germanica or Periplaneta fuliginosa. The noxious arthropods can effectively be controlled by applying the controlling agent for the noxious arthropods comprising the alpha -pyrone compound to the noxious arthropods.
