PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preventing and controlling the formation of engine deposits in a direct injection spark-ignition gasoline engine. SOLUTION: The method for controlling the formation of engine deposits in a direct injection spark-ignition gasoline engine comprises driving the engine with the use of a fuel composition composed of a major amount of a hydrocarbon having a boiling point in the range of the boiling point of gasoline and an effective amount for controlling the formation of deposits of a fuel additive composition [containing (a) an aromatic ester compound of a polyalkylphenoxyalkanol or its fuel-soluble salt and (b) a poly(oxylalkylene) amine].
