PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and method for detecting the volume of fabric of a sensor-free BLDC motor washing machine capable of detecting the volume of fabric to be washed using a revolution rate difference of a motor. SOLUTION: The fabric volume detector of a washing machine with a driver of a sensor-free BLDC motor is composed of a position detection section 44 detecting the position of the rotor of a motor 43, a microcomputer 45 controlling the revolution rate of the motor, a pulse width modulation section 46 controlling the inverter section 42, and a memory section 47 storing the revolution value of the motor. The volume of fabric in the washing machine is detected by sequentially performing the following steps of a step in which elapse of a first prescribed time is determined when the motor 43 is driven and its revolution reaches a prescribed level, and a step in which the motor is controlled in a torque control mode when the first prescribed time elapses and the volume of fabric is detected from the revolution of the motor when a second prescribed time elapses since the switch to the torque control mode.
