<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize smooth control when an operation situation is greatly changed in a device for learning a control amount determining element and performing control at the next time in accordance with the learned value. <P>SOLUTION: In the control of an internal combustion engine, the control amount determining element required for determining control amount is learned, and predetermined control is performed using a value of the learned control amount determining element in the control at the next time in a control method. When performing control on a plurality of scenes where operation situations differ, (1) the value of the control amount determining element is learned every different operation situations, and a previously learned value corresponding to different operation situation is used if the operation situation is different in the control at the next time. (2) The value of the control amount determining element is learned during the control, and the previously learned value is abandoned and an initial value determined in advance is used if operation situation differs from other operation situations in the control at the next time.
