PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an energy absorbing type steering device allowing stable and efficient energy absorption independently of the direction of inputting a load to a shaft without having influences on the durability of components. SOLUTION: The energy absorbing shaft comprises a first shaft 1a having a first protruded portion 7 at one end, a first pipe 3a consisting of a hollow pipe having a fragile portion 22 on the circumference, and a spacer 11 having a second protruded portion 12 on one face of a circumferential base portion 23 in the direction of its axial center. The end of the protruded portion of the first shaft 1a is fixed to one end of the first pipe 3a, and the spacer 11 with the second protruded portion 12 opposed to the first protruded portion 7 is fastened to the other end of the first pipe 3a.
