PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple method for producing a maleimide-carboxylic acid by hydrolyzing an ester without using an organic solvent as a reaction medium. SOLUTION: The simple method for producing the maleimide-carboxylic acid is to hydrolyze a maleimide-carboxylic acid ester in 40-80 mass% aqueous sulfuric acid solution, add the organic solvent dissolving the maleimide- carboxylic acid and hardly compatible with water, wash the separated organic solvent layer, dehydrate the layer and crystallize the maleimide-carboxylic acid to purify the same which is the objective product.
