A backlight unit includes: a power converter for generating a light source power voltage in response to a voltage control signal; a light-emitting diode string one end of which is connected to the light source power voltage; a short circuit detector for receiving the light source power voltage and for enabling a short circuit signal; and a light source controller for generating the voltage control signal, wherein, when the short circuit signal is enabled, the voltage control signal is generated to stop generation of the light source power voltage. The short circuit detector includes a voltage divider for dividing the light source power voltage to output a detection voltage, and a comparison circuit which generates a reference voltage corresponding to a voltage level of the detection voltage, compares the reference voltage with the detection voltage, and enables the short circuit signal according to a comparison result. The backlight unit according to the present invention can detect a short circuit of an LED string by comparing the light source power voltage applied to the LED string with the reference voltage.
