<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a color separation element which can perform color separation in a uniform polarization state by a combination of wavelength-selective retarders and a polarization separation element or color separation function element. <P>SOLUTION: The color separation element is equipped with: a 1st color separation means 100 which uses wavelength-selective retarders converting the polarization direction of different specified wavelength ranges and has a polarization separation element 101 sandwiched between the two wavelength-selective retarders 102 and 103 (or has a parallel confrontation arrangement of a color separation function element reflecting or transmitting light of only a specified color and the wavelength-selective retarders); and a 2nd color separation means 104 composed of a polarization separation element 105. The color separation element performs three-color separation by making substantially linear polarized light incident on the 1st color separation means 100 at an angle of nearly 45° to separate the light into two colors of a transmitted light and a reflected light and then separating one of the separated lights into two colors of a transmitted light and a reflected light by the 2nd color separation means 104. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
