<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve alignment stability of an entire liquid crystal layer even when the liquid crystal layer is made thick, to prevent the occurrence of a turbid state due to flowage or defects near the center in the thickness direction of the liquid crystal layer and to prevent decrease in transmittance or malfunction of deflection. <P>SOLUTION: The deflecting element comprises a pair of transparent substrates 11, 12 and a liquid crystal layer 15 comprising a chiral smectic C phase with homeotropic alignment and filling the space between the substrates 11, 12. An electric field is applied by electrodes 14 on the liquid crystal layer 15 in the plane direction of the substrates 11, 12 so as to deflect the optical path of the light transmitting through the liquid crystal layer 15. A substrate 17 is inserted to divide the liquid crystal layer 15 into a plurality of layers in the thickness direction of the substrates 11, 12. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
