<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical path switching element simple in structure, high in durability and light availability and high in response speed, and to provide a spacial light modulator and an image display device. <P>SOLUTION: The optical path switching element is provided with a light incidence part 3 for making light incident through a light transmission member 1, a reflection part 6 for reflecting incident light and a light emission part 4 for emitting reflected light, and a refractive index variable material 5 changing a refractive index corresponding to the presence/absence of an applied electric field is enclosed in the optical path of the incident light. The refractive index variable material 5 is sealed with a sealant 11 and a light shielding film 21 is provided so as not to make the light incident on the refractive index variable material 5 from the sealant 11. By such constitution, the light made incident from an angle other than a desired angle on the refractive index variable material 5 is eliminated. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
